- c.1325, from O.Norw. litmosi, M.Du. lijkmoes, from leken "to drip, leak" + mos "moss," so called because the blue dye is obtained from lichens. Spelling associated with obsolete Eng. lit "to dye, to stain," from O.N. lita, from litr "color, dye," cognate with O.E. wlite "brightness, beauty," from P.Gmc. *wlitiz. Figurative use of litmus test is first attested 1957, from scientific use of litmus-treated paper as a chemical indicator.
